Adult Sunday School Class
Join us every Sunday at 10 a.m. for Sunday School.
The Session and Pastor Doug have designed a curriculum for the Summer and Fall of 2024 which will assist you in your growth in grace and knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ. Below is a message from Pastor Doug regarding the dates and a description of the different classes.
July 7th through August 11, 2024 – I will teach a series of classes on the life and ministry of Jonathan Edwards. Edwards lived from 1703 to 1758 in New England and is probably the most famous pastor-theologian in American Church History. He is most famous for his sermon “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God.” But, as we will see, his ministry touched on so many other areas. He lived during what is known as America’s First Great Awakening and through his writings and sermons he warned of the excesses during this mighty movement of God in Colonial America. But he also defended the work when some ministers criticized it as a whole. 4 lectures will be biographical as we look at his life and ministry. Lynn will teach one of the classes on Jonathan’s wife Sarah Pierrepont. His marriage and family life were marked by great blessing, but like all families, they had their share of trials and Lynn’s class will help us to understand the couple better. Then, on AugustĀ 4th, I will preach the sermon for which he is so well-known, “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God.” I will preach it during the Sunday School hour in the sanctuary. Then, on August 11th we will conclude our studies on Edwards by reviewing “Sinners in the Hands …,” looking at its historical impact, and discussing its modern-day relevance.
September 1st – Lynn and I will give a report, Lord willing, on our trip to Scotland. We plan to assist our friend, Rev. Colin Macleod, in a week of evangelistic work in Lochcarron from 8/17 to 8/22 and then take a week of vacation in the Scottish Highlands and on the Isle of Skye from 8/23 to 8/29. So please pray for us as we pray, plan, and prepare for this trip.
September 8th – We will begin a 12-week study from Ligonier Ministry entitled The Whole Christ: Legalism, Antinomianism, and Gospel Assurance – Why the Marrow Controversy Still Matters. The Marrow Controversy is a little-known-of and little-heard-of controversy in Scotland in the early 18th Century. Dr. Sinclair Ferguson will teach the series. Dr. Ferguson is well-schooled in the historical circumstances behind the controversy and “The Marrow’s” theological and practical implications for the church in every age. How does one properly emphasize the role of God’s moral law in believers without drifting off into legalism? How does one emphasize the marvelous grace of God in the gospel without falling into antinomianism? How can anyone experience true assurance of salvation when it is so easy to drift off into one of these theological errors? Some of you may remember what was known as “The Lordship Controversy” in the late 20th and early 21st Century in America. This was a modern-day “Marrow Controversy.” Knowledge of this Scottish controversy in the early 1700s would have greatly helped evangelical leaders in this modern-day debate. Every generation of the Christian church since the 1st Century has fought this battle in some shape or form. Dr. Ferguson is probably the modern-day expert on “The Marrow;” he will help us to understand it and apply its truths to ourselves, our families, and our church.
Please take advantage of these excellent opportunities as we enter the last half of 2024!
