Men’s Prayer Ministry

The men of Hickory Withe Presbyterian Church meet for prayer the first Saturday of every month at 7:00 AM. A delicious breakfast is served, Pastor Doug leads a brief devotional and the men assemble in small groups in order to pray. We try to be finished by 8:15. First Timothy 2:1-2 provides the basis for our prayer ministry – “First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions…” We pray for the needs of our church, for churches in our area, for our community leaders and for our nation. Please join us for this vital ministry in the life of our church.

Men’s Bible Study Ministry

On April 27, 2025, the men will engage in a 17-week study in 2 Corinthians. When we meet each week, we will begin the study by listening to a sermon from our passage by Dr. James Montgomery Boice. His sermons typically last around 30 minutes, so we will use the rest of the hour to discuss what we have heard.

You may ask, “Why study 2 Corinthians?” My sermon title for Easter Sunday was “What made Paul tick?” These studies in 2 Corinthians will provide us with additional information related to this question. How did Paul endure what he endured? What was his secret? In 2 Corinthians, Paul is very transparent about his life, ministry, and sufferings. By “eavesdropping” on his conversation with this 1st Century church, we will learn how to endure suffering when it comes our way, and especially the suffering that attends the proclamation of the Gospel. When an individual Christian or a church begins to confess openly their allegiance to Jesus Christ and begins to unashamedly declare the Gospel of grace, untold sufferings may come. There is nothing that Satan hates more than the propagation of the good news about Jesus Christ. He unleashes the forces of hell in order to squelch Christ’s messengers. Those who obey their Lord in sharing with others the love and grace of God in Jesus Christ will face the same opposition their Lord and his Apostles faced. In modern American culture, it may be to the degree of suffering recorded in the New Testament, but it will be similar in kind. So, as we continue our efforts in 2025 to evangelize our “Jerusalem” (i.e. Hickory Withe and Fayette County), we need a book like 2 Corinthians to help us navigate the choppy waters which surely lie ahead. The book is not only beneficial for Christian ministers, but also very helpful for lay Christians, and especially lay leaders and officers.
